The Federal Government has threatened to sanction members of the Joint Health Sector Union (JOHESU) over its planned strike. The union had threatened to embark on a nationwide seven-day warning strike if the government fails to meet their demands which include payment of hazard and inducement allowance by mid-night of Sunday, September 13. In a statement signed by its national chairman, Joy Josiah, JOHESU said the warning strike will only involve federal institutions while the states and local government health institutions will be placed “on red alert for possible entry into the fray if the federal government foot-drags in attending to our demands”. But speaking on Friday in Abuja, the Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige, asked the union to shelve its planned industrial action.   The National Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended the nationwide industrial action.  Dr Aliyu Sokumba who is the President of NARD confirmed this to the media on Thursday evening. Dr Sokumba disclosed that the union will review the progress made in talks with the Federal Government in two weeks. On Wednesday, the Federal Government and the doctors reached an agreement in a bid to end the industrial action. During the meeting which almost took the entire day, NARD had disclosed that it will liaise with the executive council with a view to calling off the strike. Both parties had been in talks to resolve the issues which led to NARD declaring an end to the country-wide strike. We understands that the tenure of the incumbent Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Idowu Olayinka will come to an end on the 31st of December. CAFE, in a press statement signed by its Coordinator, Ayanlola Ayanteju, stated that they are concerned about the controversies that trailed the recently concluded congregational election. The congrgational election was held to elect members of the congregation Assembly who would in turn elect two members of the Senate saddled with the responsibility of electing the next Vice-Chancellor.
