The Governing Council of the University of Ibadan will make a decision on the appointment of an acting Vice-Chancellor on Monday, this blog  exclusively gathered. Recall that this blog  had last week reported that the institution may get an acting VC as the crisis rocking the process continued to fester . The process for the selection of the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan suffered another setback as the majority of members of the institution’s Senate boycotted the election held on Wednesday evening . This blog  had earlier reported that on Wednesday morning that following a letter from the Education Minister, Adamu Adamu to the chairman of the institution’s governing council chairman, an order was given for ongoing selection process to be halted. However, rather than allow the council members deliberate and take steps on the order the Vice Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka after an emergency meeting on Tuesday evening ordered the election of two senate representative members . This, AIBNETWORK  understands, is against due process as the mandate to start the process all over was given to the governing council. Crisis rocking University of Ibadan took a new turn on wednesday as four members of the Governing Council of the Premier University staged a walk out. The members included two external members appointed by the federal government Dr Jaju Muhammad and Prof Mande Samaila and two internal members of the council Professor Ademola Aremu and Professor Abel Olorunnisola. They walked after about five and half hour when the meeting had commenced. Investigations revealed that the members walked out after efforts to ensure that the Council maintain absolute control and act according to the letter from the Federal Government through the National Universities Commission and Federal Ministry of Education which asked the Council to review the entire process including re-inviting shortlisted 18 candidates for the VC position.  The appointment of the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan has continued to deepen as the Senate has allegedly taken over the responsibilities of the Governing Council. AIBNETWORK  recalls that following the various petitions against the credibility of the selection process and protest from workers of the institution, the selection process was halted. This newspaper gathered that in a letter from the Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu to the Chairman of the Governing Council, copied to the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka, the council was mandated to start the selection process all over again. The letter from the minister also ordered the council to conduct a new election for Senate representatives of the Joint selection committee and re-invite all 18 VC aspirants. The Minister also ordered the Vice-Chancellor, Olayinka to recuse himself from the entire process after multiple stakeholders alleged that he is working for the imposition of the deputy, Prof. Kayode A

    Clash between Agodi Prison officials and commercial motorcycle riders popularly known as Okada in Ibadan started this morning. Violence erupted at the Agodi Gate area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Tuesday when prison officials allegedly shot a motorcyclist. According to AIBNETWORK  reports, the okada rider had an argument with prison officials who wanted the access route to the prison cleared but the situation degenerated into violence leading to a crisis in the area. Thereafter, the police station at Gate was attacked allegedly by some angry motorcyclists. The okada rider who sustained a gunshot wound is, however, alive and receiving treatment at UCH Ibadan, while security operatives led by the Joint security task force Operation Burst have taken over to restore normalcy in the area. Meanwhile, contrary to some reports that the face-off was between the police and motorcycle riders, the police spokesman Gbenga Fadeyi said no policeman fired any shot at the scene.

           The government of Benue State has approved Friday as a workfree day. This is one of the measures aimed at cushioning the effect of COVID-19 in the state. However, the measure is to run for three months only, from 6 th  November, 2020 to 29 th  January, 2021. This is to enable civil servants in the state to harvest their farm products during the period.      In its reaction to the development, t he Nigerian Islamic human rights organization, the Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), which has been in the forefront of the campaign for a workfree Friday, has welcomed the three-month moratorium. MURIC described it as a half measure and a temporary relief for workers in Benue State. In addition, the group called on Northern governors and legislators to leverage on the directive by declaring workfree Friday throughout the year.
