COVID-19: Reps set up committee on dead frontline healthcare workers

The House of Representatives  has set up a committee to interface with families of healthcare workers who died in the frontline of the COVID-19 pandemic for them to receive financial benefits. The lower legislature also said it would intervene in all pending issues concerning the payment and welfare of health workers in the country. The chairman, House of Committee on Health Services, Dr Tanko Sununu, stated these during a courtesy visit to the Medical and Health Workers’ Union of Nigeria in Abuja. At the event, the National President of MHWUN, Josiah Biobelemoye, urged the legislative and executive arms of government to prioritise the needs of healthcare workers and warned that the delayed payment of deferred and adjusted salaries was “a ticking time bomb.” Sununu said the National Assembly was still reviewing the manner of compensation that would be made available to the affected families. Three Policemen Drowned In Oyo Town While Chasing Weed-smoking Hoodlums

By  admin  -  July 18, 2020 The Oyo State Police Command has lost three constables who drowned in a bridge washed away by flood on Balogun Street in Oyo town. The policemen, attached from Atiba Police Division, trailed some hoodlums to the area when the thugs started running towards the bridge. According to an eyewitness, one of the hoodlums reportedly jumped into the water and the policemen jumped after him during which the officers drowned. IBNET correspondent quoted the witness, who gave his name as Okunola Abbas as saying that, “On Sunday, July 12, some policemen from Oyo Atiba division were passing through Balogun Street in Oyo town and saw some hoodlums smoking weed in the area. “The area is notorious for hooliganism. By  admin  -  July 18, 2020 One of the three suspects linked with serial killings in the Akinyele area of Ibadan, the Oyo State capital, has said that he got N500 and food for each of the six persons he murdered in the area. No fewer than five females were raped and murdered in Akinyele Local Government Area of Ibadan in the month of June. According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the 19-year-old suspect whose name was not disclosed was among the 19 suspects paraded on Friday by Oyo State Commissioner of Police, Nwachuckwu Enwonwu, for various offences ranging from armed robbery, defilement, motorcycle theft, among others. The suspect said he was sent on the mission by a 50-year-old herbalist, who, he claimed, was his master. WASSCE: FG, WAEC agree to shift examination date   The Federal Government and West African Examination Council (WAEC) have agreed to shift the date of West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) from the August 4 to September 5, 2020, earlier announced. Minister of State for Education, Hon. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, who disclosed this on Friday in Abuja, said this was the outcome of a meeting between the Federal Government and officials of WAEC’s Nigeria office on Monday and that both parties have agreed to further consult with four other countries on new examination date. 774,000 Jobs: Ope Salami To Inaugurate Oyo State Selection Committee Tomorrow

Ope Salami will inaugurate members of the committee in the state tomorrow. Members of the committee include three top class Monarch, a former Head of Service, a former NURTW Chairman, representatives of the Christian Association of Nigeria and the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs among others. The committee is expected to generate 33,000 jobs in Oyo State. The Programme is also expected to provide modest stipends for itinerant workers to undertake roads rehabilitation and social housing construction, urban and rural sanitation, health extension and other critical services. According to Pantami, his “salaries and allowances” as a minister are lesser compared to what he earned as a professor at the International University Madinah, Saudi Arabia. The minister was reacting to a report by Sahara Reporters which claimed he had purchased three houses for his three wives since he assumed office barely a year ago. Nigeria’s first female combat helicopter pilot dies in road accident July 15, 2020   Nigeria’s first-ever female combat helicopter pilot Tolulope Arotile died on Tuesday as  a result of head injuries sustained in a road traffic accident in the northwestern state of Kaduna, according to the Nigeria Air Force (NAF). She contributed to the efforts to rid the Nigerian north-central region of armed groups by flying several combat missions. The NAF described her demise as “unfortunate,” saying her service to Nigeria was “short but impactful.” The young pilot was commissioned as an officer of the NAF in 2017. As the first woman to fly a fighter helicopter in Nigeria, Arotile became a popular figure in the country after she was recognized by the NAF for her passion in doing what has been stereotyped to be a man’s job.
