VC Race: You Are Mentally Idle — UI SSANU, NASU Blast Senate Members

The University of Ibadan branch of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) have fired by at the institution’s Senate describing its plan to punish protesters as a sign of mental idleness . This blog  had earlier reported that some Senate members at the University had on Wednesday, threatened to punish SSANU and NASU members who participated in a protest against the ongoing selection process of the University last Wednesday. However, the Chairman of SSANU, Mr. Wale Akinremi who spoke on behalf of the two unions at a press conference held at the University, remarked that Senate role is purely academic. He described those who threatened to punish the union members as idle individuals. “The responsibility of Senate is purely academic but not union matters. We want the federal government to pay academic staff because idleness is affecting them. “Senate has no right to sit on our matters. They don’t have right to sit on our matters”.

UI VC Race: 459 Members Shun Senate Meeting

Only 188 out of the 639 members of the Senate attended an emergency meeting convened by university of Ibadan yesterday, this blog can report. The senate is composed of 465 professors, 153 non-professors, elected members from congregation. Others are acting heads of departments and directors. Sources said the meeting was convened to address the crisis surrounding the appointment of the vice-chancellor as the 5-year tenure of the incumbent, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, ends in November 30, 2020. It would be recalled that protest had last week greeted the planned announcement of Prof. Kayode Adebowale, a supposed choice of the outgoing VC. The process has since been suspended.   The Senate of the University of Ibadan has revealed that members of the institution’s branch of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) will be punished for the participating in protests. This blog recalls that the unions last week protested against the alleged plan to impose the Deputy Vice Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale as the next Vice Chancellor . However, after an emergency meeting on Wednesday, the Senate declared that the unions have business interfering in the selection process of new Vice-Chancellor of the University. #ENDSARS: STOP BURNING MOSQUES IN IGBOLAND – MURIC

          Two mosques were set ablaze by the Igbo in Enugu on Saturday, 31 st  October, 2020. The Islamic School, Afikpo, Ebonyi State has also received threats of impending invasion. It will be recalled that 11 (eleven) Muslims were killed during the #EndSARS protests in Port Harcourt and Orlu while the Orlu Central Mosque was completely destroyed barely two weeks ago. Markets belonging to Muslims in the region were also attacked and properties worth millions of naira were destroyed, including whole trailers with the goods.     The Nigerian Islamic human rights group, Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC), has condemned the attacks on Muslims in Igboland. MURIC called for a halt to the burning of mosques in the South East and South South. The controversy surrounding the selection of the next Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan festered on Friday as the institution’s chapter of the Senior Staff Association of Nigeria University (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) petitioned the Minister of Eductaion, Adamu Adamu. This blog recalls that the ongoing process for the selection of the next VC was suspended by the governing council after a protest by workers who alleged that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Idowu Olayinka wants to impose his Deputy, Professor Kayode Adebowale as his successor.
